It gives us great pleasure to let you know that a whole new range medium to premium Greek wines have arrived with us here.
Last September Simon our owner traveled to mainland Greece on the Peloponnese region. He was with the Wines of Greece UK federation to promote their wines in the UK market.
We arrived in Athens and took a bus to Naphlion on the East coast. Over the next week we traveled all along the Northern coast of the region via Agio and Pa
tras, then onto the island of Cefalonia for a day.
The outstanding natural beauty of the region with the Nemea and Aigialeia regions with rolling Hills and mountains. The diversity of the wines with low lying vineyards then wines from higher altitudes made for wonderful tastings and a cultural journey.
The hospitality of course from the selected wineries was incredible and there were some spectacular meals. From slow cooked lamb on a BBQ to local cheeses and wonderful vegetables and fruits. We certainly were not left hungry on this trip!
The wines were quite simply a revelation! From the natural minerality and acidity of the Assyrtiko white grape. To the super fresh and finely tannic red grape Agiorgi tiko.
There were several wineries that hugely impressed us. Greece had a somewhat bad reputation in the 1980’s here in the UK. I can tell you now this is certainly not the case the investment in the industry has transformed it. So now we have wineries and wines of the highest caliber available from the area. We have numerous options of these in this exciting selection.
What was really interesting on the trip was the amount of impressive skin contact wines that are being made there. This can result in white wines with a lovely fuller flavour with the extra extraction of the white grapes. The wines lay on the skins anything from 2 7 days depending on the winemaker. Also, the Orange wines that are coming out of here were a real highlight.
All of the above we have bought in for to explore and have some fun with! These wines are on the premium side so the price is not entry level. These wines are seriously good with wine-making skills at the highest end and cutting-edge style.
